Acme is the consummate radiator repair shop. There are very few places in the country where you can get your radiator cleaned, repaired, recored, replaced or customized. Decades ago, radiator shops were a staple in every city and the majority of towns. In the late 1970s, NARSA (the National Auto Radiator Service Association, of which Acme is still a member) estimated that there were about 17,700 radiator repair shops. Today, there are just a few hundred, and even that number is dropping.
So… what happened? A lot of things, actually. The biggest factors included cheap radiators from offshore manufacturers flooding the market and a lack of desire by radiator repair shops to learn the new skills required to repair radiators. Many shops were run out of business by warehouse distributors (WDs) selling cheap parts for low margins. Those of us who believed in repairing radiators and battling the WDs at their own game survived.
From its humble beginnings in 1950 as a small shop in Islip Terrace, NY, Acme thrived and expanded its product line and became one of Long Island’s largest distributors of cooling system and air conditioning parts… and the only one that installs them, too!
